With respect to cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems, it is convenient to set the orientation of layers of orthotropic multilayer shells of cylindrical, spherical or curved shape. This is especially important when the shell is modeled by an orthotropic material, the properties of which vary in different directions.
If you direct the Z-axis of the cylindrical CS along the axis of the cylindrical shell, and the X-axis in the radial direction, then the layer directed at an angle of 0 degrees relative to this CS will have a circumferential direction. And accordingly, the X direction of the orthotropic material will have a circumferential direction.

If you direct the Z-axis of a spherical CS along the axis of rotation of the spherical shell, and the X-axis in the radial direction, then the layer directed at an angle of 0 degrees relative to this CS will have a circumferential direction. And accordingly, the X direction of the orthotropic material will have a circumferential direction.
