Puck Theory

The Puck strength theory determines fiber and interfiber failure in a single unidirectional layer. This theory is based on Mohr strength theory.

The criterion describes two different forms of fiber failure.

1. Fiber failure under longitudinal stress – Fiber Failure:

2. Matrix failure under transverse and shear stresses – Matrix Failure:

The criterion considers the volume element around the fiber and determines the normal and shear stresses relative to the inclined plane. By varying the inclination angle, the most dangerous inclined plane of failure is determined in the matrix, where the combination of normal and shear stresses reaches a critical state.
